Azealia Banks was left in tears after a taping of âWild âN Out.â
The Harlem rapper reveals that she was invited to perform on Nick Cannonâs sketch comedy and improv show for MTV, but the experience turned out to be a nightmare. Instead, she says she was complexion shamed by the cast during a freestyle battle, which she didnât plan to participate in.
âI did Wildinâ out today. There were tons of pre-planned colorist jokes and of course âŠ. cry baby cried,â she wrote on Instagram.
According to Banks, one of the cast members started insulting her looks, including the color of her skin. âSome little scrawny black Atlanta twink was prepared for me,â she said. âThey planned this â hit me on short notice, told me I didnât have to participate in the coon ass freestyle battles ,(not my style) and I was to sing my song and go home.â
The clowning continued as other members of the cast joined in. âI show up and some guy whoâs darker than me starts calling me ugly and being colorist, then all of a sudden a choir of the most disgustingly basic, local, cattle call âurbanâ pseudo comedic âFAT BECause You sit in a chair all dayâ greasy soul food induced south of the mason Dixon ,self hatred. Ass It#backwards, post-Jim crow , post traumatic slave disorder true self esteem less, Ward of the state CLOWNS with their low scale and highly UNimpressive resumes, start going off about how the beautiful Azealia Banks looks!â
An emotional Azealia was angered by the incident and her alter ego âYemayaâ came out. âIâve never felt so much hate and rage for anyone else than I did in that moment. Yemaya was really on stage,â she said.
She detailed more of the account on Instagram Stories, explaining that no one came to her defense. âNot a single one of those black men called ANY of the white women on stage ugly,â she said. âIâm sorryâŠbut yesterday was a testament to why I donât ever let ni**as near me.â
Banks is promoting her new single âTreasure Islandâ and upcoming album Fantasea II: The Second Wave, due later this summer.
Cannon has caught wind of the claims and responded on IG. Captioning a screenshot from Banks’ Instagram story where she questioned if she resorted to making fun of Nick having a disorder would she be wrong, Nick wrote: “Donât you hate when you create your own storms but forget your umbrella??? @azealiabanks We are praying for you Queen #speedyrecovery #Healing. She #Wildnout for real #Karma.”
The format of the Wild ‘n Out show pits teams against each other in what can at times be a brutal jonesing session. Either Banks didn’t get the memo or things may have been taken too far. Maybe we’ll get to see when the episode airs.
